Presenter of the SHOWTIME weekly film show Tuesday Night with Nell Schofield and now Showcase at NIDA on Showcase, Nell Schofield is one of the industry’s most respected identities working in the fields of television, radio and print media.
A graduate of NIDA where she and seven other fellow students devised the play Strictly Ballroom, Nell first appeared on screen as the star of Bruce Beresford’s cult classic Puberty Blues. Since then Nell has appeared in numerous productions as well as a presenter on many shows including CNN International’s ‘The Art Club’ and CNN’s travel show ‘Hot Spots’. She reported for five years with ABC TV’s weekly arts program Review and her voice is currently heard on ‘Media Watch’.
On radio Nell has reported for ABC’s Radio National on programs including ‘Arts Today’ and ‘Breakfast’ as well as having presented the 53 part series ‘The Story of Pop’ (currently in its third re-run) and ‘Bush Telegraph’
In print, her articles have appeared in The Bulletin, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Magazine and Vogue Australia among many other publications. She writes a weekly film review for Melbourne’s Sunday Herald Sun and since 1987 has written travel features journeying on assignment to destinations such as Antarctica (twice), the Arctic and South Africa.
Nell’s first book, ‘First Kiss’ (with photographer Lisa Tomasetti), was published by Allen and Unwin in 2002 and her second, a monograph on the film Puberty Blues for the Australian Screen Classics series, will be published by Currency Press in 2004.
In 1999 she directed the inaugural Mercedes Australian Fashion Week Festival, a nine-day program of public cultural activities to coincide with the industry events at Fox Studios in Sydney. In 2000 Nell associate produced two educational documentaries for Channel 4 about the making of the films ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ for the English production company Double Exposure.
Nell has written a play, ‘Cowgirls and Indians’ (produced by NIDA in 1988) and a screenplay, ‘Chillseeker’ (commissioned by Lea Films), and her documentary script ‘Flaming Follies’ was developed with the assistance of the NSW Film and Television Office. As an actor Nell has worked with the Sydney Theatre Company, ABC TV and the commercial networks.
In 2000 Nell was appointed to the board of OBJECT (the Australian Centre for Craft and Design) and hosts a monthly design discussion called DFACTORY at the Powerhouse Museum of Sydney.
In September 2007 she was trained by the Nobel Laureate and Former Vice President of the US, Al Gore, to present his now famous Climate Project slideshow and is currently the film reviewer for Channel 9’s ‘Sunday’ program
