Synopsis In this Oscar-nominated sensitive and powerful story from Sweden, Michael Nyqvist stars as Daniel Dareus, a successful conductor who returns to his hometown to convalesce.
As a boy Daniel wanted to make music to open people's hearts and he begins to work with the church choir, opening their hearts with song and their minds to the hurts and prejudices that have been part of village life. All their thoughts come to the fore as they are honest with each other for the first time in a long time.
And, of course, all the women in the choir fall for Daniel's quiet charm, which doesn't go down too well with the male population of the village who all accuse of him of sleeping with their wives. Especially the pastor of the church who is angry that the choir outnumbers his congregation.
This is an uplifting film of courage in the face of the anger and hurt inflicted by those we love and of reaching understanding. "Gabriella's Song", which is sung during the film and over the end credits has become extremely popular with all who have seen the film and is truly inspirational.
TRIVIA: First film role for actress Helen Sjoholm (Gabriella), one of Sweden's biggest stars on the musical stage.
