Director
Olivier Dahan

Year
2007

Genre
Drama

Synopsis
Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (A Good Year) stars in this impressionistic portrait of French chanteuse Edith Piaf. Cotillard immerses herself in Piaf, body and soul.

The tragic story unfolds from the mean streets of Paris to the dazzling limelight of New York's famous concert halls as Piaf struggles constantly to sing and survive, to live and love. Raised in her grandmother's brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu), who gave her the name La Mome Piaf (The Little Sparrow).

Jean-Pierre Martins, of the French rock group Les Silmarils, stars as Piaf's great love, Marcel Cerdan, the 1948 Middleweight Boxing Champion.

The soundtrack includes unforgettable songs made famous by Piaf such as "Hymne a l'amour", "Milord", "Non, je ne regrette rien" and her signature song "La Vie en Rose".

TRIVIA:
To help portray Edith Piaf, Marion Cotillard shaved back her hairline and shaved off her eyebrows, which were later penciled in to better resemble the singer; make-up could take up to five hours when Cotillard played the older Edith Piaf; Cotillard is one of five actors to have won an Oscar for a part spoken mainly in a foreign language. Sophia Loren, Robert De Niro, Benicio Del Toro and Roberto Benigni are the others.
