Year
2007

Genre
Drama

Synopsis
In this multi AFI-winning, powerful story based on Raimond Gaita's critically acclaimed memoir, directed by Richard Roxburgh and written by poet and playwright Nick Drake, Eric Bana stars as Romulus.

Romulus and his beautiful wife Christina (Franka Potente) struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son, Raimond (Kodi Smit-McPhee). It is a story of impossible love that ultimately celebrates the unbreakable bond between father and son.

Kodi Smit-McPhee gives a truly moving portrayal of Rai, a boy trying to understand the mother he loves so much; prepared to forgive her for all her failings.

Geoffrey Simpson's cinematography is a joy, as the landscape becomes a part of those who inhabit and work on it.

Support cast includes Marton Csokas, Russell Dykstra and Terry Norris.

Raimond Gaite is now Professor of Moral Philosophy at King's College University of London, and Professor of Philosophy at Australian Catholic University. His other books include Good And Evil: An Absolute Conception, Common Humanity: Thinking About Love & Truth & Justice, which was one of the Economist's best books of 2000, and The Philospher's Dog, which was short listed for the New South Wales Premier's Award and the Age Book of the Year, both in 2003.

Richard Roxburgh took seven years to adapt the book: "The singular thing about this story, given its tragic dimension, its almost biblical reach, is how strangely uplifting it is. Somehow through the pain, there is not only a sense of possibility, but of promise, held in the relationship of that father and son."
