Synopsis Roberto Benigni directs and stars as Attilio, a poet and lecturer in poetry at the University for Foreigners in Rome.
The war in Iraq has not yet started, though the whiff of conflict is already in the air. Current events scarcely touch him; at night he dreams only of a woman he longs to marry, Vittoria, and in real life she wants nothing to do with him.
One day Attilio receives a call from his friend, an Iraqi poet, back in Baghdad: Vittoria, who is in Iraq with him to finish his biography, has received a severe head wound in one of the first Anglo-American bombing raids; she is at death's door. Attilio doesn't hesitate for a second, moving heaven and earth he manages to get to Iraq that very day, muscling in on a Red Cross delegation. When Vittoria does at last open her eyes again, Attilio is no longer with her; he has been captured by American troops, his presence having been betrayed by the endless ringing of his cell phone and whilst she returns to Italy Attilio is imprisoned.
Support cast includes Benigni's wife Nicoletta Braschi, Jean Reno, Tom Waits and Emilia Fox.
TRIVIA: Roberto Benigni named his character Attilio as a tribute to poet Attilio Bertolucci (1911-2000) father of famous directors Giuseppe and Bernardo Bertolucci.
