Synopsis In his first feature, Baz Luhrmann directs Paul Mercurio, in his debut role, as Scott Hastings in this multi-award winning, engaging story of a champion ballroom dancer whose unconventional approach puts his career in jeopardy.
When Scott partners Fran (Tara Morice), who is willing to experiment with his new steps, he is fired with determination - and he'll need it coming up against the ballroom dancing hierarchy who are not about to tolerate any new-fangled dance steps.
A superb cast includes Gia Carides, Bill Hunter, Pat Thomson, Barry Otto, Sonia Kruger and Kris McQuade. Professional dancers in the cast, besides Mercurio, are Antonio Vargas, whose flamenco dance is mesmerising, Sonia Kruger and Leonie Page.
John Paul Young's career was revitalised with the use of Love Is in the Air, Standing in the Rain and Yesterday's Hero.
TRIVIA: As a child, director Baz Luhrmann participated in the sorts of ballroom dancing competitions shown in the movie and appeared in the original stage play; the film makers had to hire a train to pass by Fran's house twice. The shot was the most expensive one in the entire film; the most expensive costume was the jacket worn by Scott during the grand finale. It took over six weeks to make. Some of the ornaments were imported from Spain.
