Year 1983
Genre Drama
Synopsis Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola directs this stunning black and white adaptation of the S.E. Hinton novel about coming of age in urban Oklahoma.
Oscar nominee Matt Dillon stars as Rusty James, a troubled juvenile delinquent trying to live up to the legendary reputation of his older brother, Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), and deal with their father (Dennis Hopper) trying to drink away a troubled past. On returning home after a two month absence, Motorcycle Boy finds Rusty James trying to imitate his former gang leader ways and decides to reveal some family secrets about their mother, and both brothers are determined to escape their lives or die trying.
The only colour images in the film are of the Siamese fighting fish that the colour-blind Motorcycle Boy admires. There are excellent shots by cinematographer Stephen H. Burum (The Outsiders). Support cast includes Nicolas Cage, Chris Penn, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. Sofia Coppola appears in the film under the name Domino.
Trivia: A clock is featured in every scene of this movie; the sound crew on the film had a hard time hearing Mickey Rourke's dialogue on set and referred to the production as "Mumble Fish"; Matt Dillon told the author S.E. Hinton this was his favourite book. Hinton said that when someone told her that they were usually in a reformatory.
