Romeo + Juliet
M va
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Brian Dennehy
Director Baz Luhrmann
Year 1996
Genre Action
Synopsis From the Oscar nominee Baz Luhrmann comes this innovative version of Shakespeare's classic tale, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
Gun-toting gangs roam the streets of Verona Beach, warfare between the Capulets and Montagues takes its toll - but the love between Romeo and Juliet will never die. Shakespeare's greatest hits remastered for the MTV generation? Or a millennial tale of duelling forces - love and hate, good and evil, and life and death in an impoverished world?
The superb support cast includes Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino and Miriam Margolyes.
TRIVIA: There are various bill boards throughout the movie that contain quotes from other Shakespeare plays; a billboard at Verona Beach bears the sign "L'amour" (it's in red and white, and looks a bit like the Coca Cola logo). The same sign can be seen outside Christian's window in Moulin Rouge! (2001), and also (this time in the form of a Coca Cola logo) in Luhrmann's film Strictly Ballroom (1992), and in his stage production of "La Boheme"; The Sycamore Grove theatre and huts on Verona Beach were destroyed by a hurricane during filming. The beginning of the hurricane is evident during Mercutio's death scene.
