Director Terry Green
Year 2006
Genre Drama
Synopsis Oscar winner Timothy Hutton stars as savvy New York defence lawyer Samuel Leibowitz in this story of epic injustice, based on a true story, where nine young black men are pulled off an Alabama freight train and arrested, tried and sentenced to the electric chair for allegedly raping two young white women in the spring of 1931.
The plight of the Scottsboro Boys caught the attention of Leibowitz, who agreed to represent the accused at their retrials. Samuel's journey into the Deep South symbolised the polarity of the times and set in motion a legal battle that ultimately changed the American justice system. The names have changed, but the rhetoric that convicted the Scottsboro Nine remains virtually the same.
Support cast includes Leelee Sobieski and David Strathairn.
