Synopsis
House of Flying Daggers' Yimou Zhang directs this Oscar-nominated visual extravaganza starring Chow Yun-Fat as Emperor Ping who returns unexpectedly to the Imperial palace with his second son, Prince Jai. The Emperor's pretext is to celebrate a holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress, this seems disingenuous.

For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan, her stepson, have had an illicit liaison. Feeling trapped Prince Wan dreams of escaping the palace with his secret love Chan, the Imperial Doctor's daughter. Meanwhile, Prince Jai, the faithful son, grows worried over the Empress's health and her obsession with golden chrysanthemums. Could she be headed down an ominous path?

The support cast includes Gong Li, Jay Chou and Ye Liu.

Trivia: the largest set ever built for a film in China; it took over 20 days to shoot the battle scene; more than 1000 real soldiers were used in the final battle.
