Genre Romantic Drama
Synopsis Peter O'Toole leads a powerful cast in his Oscar-nominated role delivering a charming and poignant portrayal of Maurice, an aging veteran actor who becomes absolutely taken with Jessie (Jodie Whittaker in her feature film debut), the grandniece of his closest friend (Leslie Phillips). The joy of this film is the obvious rapport between O'Toole and Phillips as they match wits and words. Vanessa Redgrave also stars.
As Maurice tries to soften the petulant young girl with the benefit of his wisdom and London culture, they begin to discover themselves. This is a witty and wise celebration of how the greatest lessons in life can come from the most unlikely places, directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill) and penned by the acclaimed Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette).
The majority of the soundtrack is by Corinne Bailey Rae.
TRIVIA: Hanif Kureishi said that Junichiro Tanizaki's novella, Diary of a Mad Old Man, is the inspiration behind the story; the plaque in the church commemorates actor Richard Beckinsale (Godber in Porridge with Ronnie Barker, Rising Damp), father of Kate, who died extremely young at the height of his career.
