Director Ridley Scott
Year 2006
Genre Romantic Drama
Synopsis Based on the best-selling novel by Peter Mayle, Oscar nominee Ridley Scott directs Oscar winner Russell Crowe as successful investment banker Max Skinner, who inherits his late uncle's vineyard in Provence.
Oscar nominee Albert Finney stars as Max's late Uncle Henry, who imparted wisdom to his young nephew, played by Freddie Highmore, when he spent his boyhood summers at the estate. As Max fondly embraces the memories of summers past (spent with a man whose wisdom and philosophy helped Max chart his successful career) while contemplating a cloudy future, a complication arises with the sudden arrival of a determined, twenty-something California girl, Christie Robert, played by Abbie Cornish, who claims to be Max's illegitimate daughter.
Support cast includes Marion Cotillard, Tom Hollander and Archie Panjabi.
TRIVIA: Max Skinner's wardrobe is largely influenced by Russell Crowe's own uncle, David William Crowe; the book Christie borrows from Max is "Death in Venice" by German writer Thomas Mann; during Max's date with Fanny, several of the clips playing in the background are from the French film Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot.
