Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story
M als
Starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Jeremy Northam
Director Michael Winterbottom
Year 2005
Genre Comedy
Synopsis Michael Winterbottom directs Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in this affectionate and equally hilarious account of what it's like trying to make a film - especially when the two lead actors are constantly vying with each other for attention.
Perfectly capturing the spirit of one of the most anarchic classic novels, Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy; a celebration of the wonderful, unfathomable chaos of life itself, this is an energetic, laugh out loud adaptation of a book which is unadaptable.
The support cast includes a wealth of British talent including Jeremy Northam, Shirley Henderson, Dylan Moran as the mad Dr Slop, Little Britain's David Walliams and Kelly MacDonald.
Trivia: he credited writer Martin Hardy is actually a pseudonym for the writer Frank Cottrell Boyce who fell out with Winterbottom during filming; the real Tony Wilson (who Steve Coogan played in 24 Hour Party People), plays the interviewer who quizzes Steve Coogan on the set; the armed soldiers in the battle scenes were members of the Sealed Knot Society, which tours the UK, performing historical re-enactments of the English Civil War.
