Synopsis Based on the book Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser, the extremely talented Oscar winner Sofia Coppola directs this unique, lavish story starring Kirsten Dunst as the young Austrian princess who, as a teenager, becomes Queen of France; with Jason Schwartzman as her indifferent husband Louis XVI.
With time on her hands Marie goes over the top on spending the taxes of the downtrodden peasants; shoes, clothes, cakes - or is it brioche? All will be revealed. Other members of the ensemble, portraying various members of the elitist court of Versailles include Rose Byrne, Rip Torn, Judy Davis, Steve Coogan, Asia Argento, Marianne Faithful and Shirley Henderson. And included in the cast are many actors who are also children of famous film professionals. The film won a well-deserved Oscar for Costume Design and is further enhanced by a distinctive soundtrack.
TRIVIA: in one scene while Marie Antoinette is getting ready, blue Converse tennis shoes are visible; Coppola commented that the shoes were purposely put in the shot to portray Marie-Antoinette as a typical teenage girl; the French government granted special permission for the crew to film in the Palace of Versailles; Spanish footwear designer Manolo Blahnik created hundreds of specially made shoes for the film; Laduree was chosen to make all of the brightly coloured pastries and cakes for the film.
