Thank You For Smoking
M ls
Starring Aaron Eckhart, Katie Holmes, Cameron Bright
Director Jason Reitman
Year 2005
Genre Comedy
Synopsis Golden Globe-nominee Aaron Eckhart stars as Nick Naylor, chief spokesman for Big Tobacco, who makes his living defending the rights of smokers and cigarette makers. Confronted by health zealots out to ban tobacco, led by an opportunistic senator, Nick goes on a PR offensive, enlisting the help of a Hollywood agent to promote smoking in movies. But the increased scrutiny of his son and a very real death threat may force him to think otherwise.
Based on Christopher Buckley's acclaimed 1994 novel, this Golden Globe nominated film is a fiercely satirical look at today's culture of spin. Also stars William H. Macy, Rob Lowe, Katie Holmes and Maria Bello.
Trivia: one of Sam Elliott's conditions to do the part was to have him carry a rifle in a scene instead of the scripted shotgun, he used his own rifle; the black and white film that Naylor watches is the Sands of Iwo Jima; no one is shown smoking a cigarette throughout the entire movie; Naylor holds an empty packet and Robert Duvall holds an unlit cigar; The Academy of Tobacco Studies building in DC is actually the Department of Labor's Frances Perkins Building, at 200 Constitution Avenue, NW.
