Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke
M ld
Starring Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, Tom Skerritt
Director Lou Adler
Year 1978
Genre Comedy
Synopsis There's nothing straight about this movie. Cheech and Chong make their debut in this riotous rock'n'roll comedy and their marijuana-laced humour keeps their spirits high as they smuggle a van from Mexico to LA. With incompetent Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach) on their trail, it all comes to a climax with an outrageous finale at LA's Roxy Theatre where Cheech performs in a pink tutu and Chong dresses as a large red Quaalude. It will make you feel very funny!
Trivia: the car that Chong drives at the beginning of the movie is actually owned by Jack Nicholson; the license plate on Cheech Marin's car, MUF DVR, was his real license plate at the time; the dog that ate the burrito after it was thrown onto the ground was not a trained dog, but a local stray. He simply walked into frame, took the burrito, and walked away; legendary LA punk band The Germs auditioned for the "Battle of the Bands" sequence, but after a food fight at the Roxy during their audition gig (in front of a live audience) they were told they would not be in the film; The Hare Krishna extras all shaved their heads for $25.
