Synopsis
Oscar-nominee Winona Ryder stars in Ben Stiller's directorial debut as a college graduate who faces the realities of careers and relationships upon leaving home. Whilst shooting a documentary depicting the daily lives of her friends (Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo and Steve Zahn) and trying to protect her artistic integrity, she must also choose between music-video executive Michael (Stiller) and brooding, sensitive slacker, Troy (Hawke).

An impressive cast also includes Andy Dick and an early performance by a young Renee Zellweger. An excellent soundtrack includes Crowded House, Dinosaur Jr., The Knack, Alice Cooper and Lenny Kravitz.

Director Stiller cast Steve Zahn after seeing him perform on stage in New York City; Ethan Hawke was in the production with Zahn; screenwriter Helen Childress wrote the character of Lelaina Pierce with Winona Ryder in mind, Childress was 19-years-old and a freshman at USC when she completed the script; the psychic friend who Lelaina calls is voiced by Ben Stiller's real-life sister, Amy Stiller; the woman that asks Winona Ryder's character to define "irony" is Stiller's mother, Anne Meara.
