The Beach
MA vs
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Virginie Ledoyen, Robert Carlyle, Tilda Swinton
Director Danny Boyle
Year 2000
Genre Adventure
Synopsis Oscar-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Richard, a brash young American traveller in search of exotic experiences.
Richard takes his friends (Virginie Ledoyen and Guillaume Canet) to a secret island-paradise off the coast of Thailand, only to find that those who discovered it first are willing to kill to keep it. Beneath the surface, this heaven on earth is less than perfect.
Personal conflict and petty jealousy ferment to create a violent rivalry and a series of tragic events fragments the community, which develops the same social evils Richard had hoped he'd left behind.
Directed by Danny Boyle adapted from the acclaimed novel by Alex Garland.
Support cast includes Tilda Swinton, Robert Carlyle and Peter Youngblood Hills.
TRIVIA: The Beach proved controversial during production, partly due to delays, shifting release dates and environmental concerns after crew members bulldozed parts of the Thai island of Phi Phi Le for the planting of non-native trees; the map Daffy gives to Richard was made by the book's author Alex Garland; two of the beaches (Ko Phi Phi Leh and Phuket in Thailand) where this was filmed were affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami on 26 December 2004.
