The Green Mile
MA va
Starring Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Bonnie Hunt, James Cromwell, David Morse
Director Frank Darabont
Year 1999
Genre Crime
Synopsis Oscar-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) goes behind prison walls once more as he directs Oscar-winner Tom Hanks as the head guard on the Green Mile (in 1935 inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" due to the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor), who has a moral dilemma when he discovers a convicted murderer (Michael Clarke Duncan) has healing powers.
Based on a Stephen King novel, this acclaimed film features a superb cast including James Cromwell, David Morse, Sam Rockwell and Harry Dean Stanton and garnered four Oscar nominations.
Trivia: the name for character John Coffey was lifted from a college professor, Rev. John Coffee, who taught history classes at Emerson College in Boston Massachusetts; Harry Dean Stanton appears in the film; there is a character named Harry, and another named Dean Stanton, which is coincidence; many of Stephen King's novels are set in the author's native Maine, but The Green Mile takes place in Louisiana; when Stephen King visited the set he asked to be strapped into Old Sparky to see how it felt.
