For Love Of The Game
M l
Starring Kevin Costner, John C. Reilly, Kelly Preston, Jena Malone
Director Sam Raimi
Year 1999
Genre Romantic Drama
Synopsis Sam Raimi directs this magical combination of sports and romance starring Oscar winner Kevin Costner as a washed-up pitcher with the Detroit Tigers making his final start. Throughout the game, he reflects back on his relationships with his long-time girlfriend (Kelly Preston) and catcher (Oscar winner John C. Reilly) in this exploration of a man torn between the woman he loves and the game he's always been devoted to.
For Love of the Game represents a change of pace for director Sam Raimi, a baseball fan born in Michigan, who doubtless enjoyed making a film featuring the Detroit Tigers.
TRIVIA: Many of the Yankees players were played by Yankee Minor Leaguers; all four umpires were real Major League umpires; shots of Billy's parents at the beginning of the movie are Kevin Costner's actual parents; the scene where the ball bounces off Mickey Hart's head is based on the famous incident where the same thing happened to Texas Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco.
