Marathon Man

Starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider, William Devane
Director John Schlesinger
Year 1976
Genre Thriller
Synopsis Oscar winner John Schlesinger directs this groundbreaking story starring Laurence Olivier as former Nazi dentist Szell who comes out of hiding to recover some stolen diamonds from an American secret agent who he believes has hidden them.
The unrelenting plot is driven by riveting performances from Olivier as the sadist and Hoffman as Babe Levy, the Jewish grad-student who takes him on after his brother is stabbed to death, culminating in one of the most horrendous torture scenes ever - you'll never see your dentist in the same way again.
TRIVIA: Dr. Szell is based on the historical Doctor Josef Mengele, head SS Doctor of Auschwitz, who was living a fugitive's life in South America when the movie was produced; the torture scene was shortened after preview audiences were taken sick; Laurence Olivier was so afraid that he would accidentally hurt Dustin Hoffman during the torture scene that he would constantly ask Hoffman if he was all right after shooting a take. As a joke, Hoffman tried to make Olivier think that he had really hurt him by screaming in a very convincing and unexpected manner.
