Desperado
MA vs
Starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Joaquim De Almeida, Cheech Marin
Director Robert Rodriguez
Year 1995
Genre Action
Synopsis Antonio Banderas does his own guitar playing as he stars as the mariachi without a name in this much-anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed El Mariachi, plunging headlong into the dark underworld of a Mexican border town ruled by the drug lord Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), who killed his lover and put a bullet through his guitar-playing hand - this time El Mariachi is out for revenge.
Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and Quentin Tarentino highlight an outstanding support cast in Robert Rodriguez's homage to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone as he picks up where his successful independent debut El Mariachi left off with this slam-bang South of the Border action saga.
Trivia: During the bar scene during the opening credits, Los Lobos, who provided the music for the film, can be seen in the audience; Raul Julia was cast as Bucho, but pulled out due to declining health; Steve Buscemi's character's name is "Buscemi" because the part was written with him in mind; Santa Cecilia (St. Cecilia) is the patron saint of music, which is an obvious reference to the Mariachi theme.
