Year 2006
Genre Drama
Synopsis See Matthew Macfadyen as never before as he goes from Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice to Gabriel, a zealous preacher. Gabriel returns to Middletown, the place of his birth and childhood. What he finds is his brother's wife running the local pub where nightly cock-fights and brawls are the order of the day.
Gabriel decides that only he can save the town from their descent into debauchery so he sets to his task with much religious zeal and fervour, pitting neighbour against neighbour, disrupting the familial harmony that once existed.
Even Gabriel's family are not free from attack and his brother, Jim (Daniel Mays) and his wife Caroline (Eva Birthistle) are the first to suffer his anger. Featuring a faultless performance of telling conviction from Matthew Macfadyen - it would send anyone running to confession, Brian Kirk has directed a dark and compelling gothic drama about the dangers of fundamentalism.
TRIVIA: The writer Daragh Carville can be seen briefly drinking a pint in one of the bar scenes.
