Are the Hollywood studios and the big independent producers paying sufficient attention to mature-age audiences? Or is this demographic being under-served in favour of popcorn movies aimed at teenagers and young adults?
The answer may depend on the individual taste and interests of cinemagoers. But it’s hard to deny that in the past few months, the majority of films released in Australia, many in step with the US, were targeted at kids and families.
For all their merits, the (over) supply of sequels such as the third editions of Shrek, Pirates of the Caribbean and Spider-Man, plus Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, was hardly designed to appeal to mature audiences. Ditto for 300 and Transformers.
Some 51% of regular moviegoers in Australia are in the 14-34 age bracket, so it’s not surprising that many movies are pitched squarely at them. Of course that still leaves 49% of the cinemagoing population. What have they had to tempt them to cinemas recently, apart from Oceans’ Thirteen, and perhaps taking the kids to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Simpsons Movie?
